Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte

April 18, 2007 · Leave a Comment

RATING:

Book Description: Orphaned into the household of her Aunt Reed at Gateshead and subject to the cruel regime at Lowood charity school, Jane Eyre nonetheless emerges unbroken in spirit and integrity. She takes up the post of governess at Thornfield Hall, falls in love with Mr. Rochester, and discovers the impediment to their lawful marriage in a story that transcends melodrama to portray a woman’s passionate search for a richer life than that traditionally allowed women in Victorian society.

Review: This is one of my favorite books of all time. I fell in love with it when my Great-Grandmother gave me a very old hardback copy of the book when I was about 13. I read and re-read the book over the next year and often slept with it under my pillow – a sure sign in those days of a much-cherished read.
